VRay proxies are a powerful tool for anyone working with complex models in Sketchup. Before we explore how to change their materials, let’s first understand what proxy meshes are. It’s important to know how they help your workflow.
What are Proxy Meshes?
A proxy mesh is a simplified version of a complex object within your Sketchup model. It acts as a stand-in for the original high-detail object, significantly reducing the overall file size and complexity. This makes your model lighter and smoother to navigate. This is particularly true when handling scenes with intricate furniture. It is also true for architectural elements or natural features.
Benefits of Using Proxy Meshes
- Improved Performance: By replacing high-poly objects with their proxy counterparts, you experience smoother panning and zooming. You also gain from overall better manipulation of your Sketchup model. This translates to a more responsive and enjoyable workflow.
- Faster Rendering Times: When rendering your final scene, VRay prioritizes rendering the proxy meshes instead of the full-detail objects. This significantly reduces render times, allowing you to iterate on your design much quicker.
We now understand the advantages of proxy meshes. Let’s move on to the process of swapping out their materials in Sketchup.
Downloading Materials

There are two ways to acquire the materials you want to use on your proxies:
- External Sources: If you have materials downloaded from external sources, you can import them. Use the “Import Asset File” button. It is located at the bottom of the VRay Asset Editor window.
- Chaos Cosmos: VRay for Sketchup comes with the built-in Chaos Cosmos browser. Use this to browse and download a vast library of high-quality materials directly within Sketchup.
Finding Proxy Materials

- Access Asset Editor: Locate the proxy object you want to change in your Sketchup model. Open the VRay Asset Editor window.
- Find Proxy Mesh: Within the Asset Editor, navigate to the “Geometry” tab. Select your proxy object and click the small arrow to the right to reveal the proxy mesh’s “Parameters”.
- Merge Materials: Click the “Merge” button. This will show a list of all the materials that are assigned to the proxy mesh.
Changing Proxy Materials

- Replace Materials: Find the material you want to change by looking at its name or thumbnail. Click the texture icon next to that material. A drop-down menu will allow you to choose your replacement material.
- Preview Changes: Once you’ve finished replacing your desired materials, start an “Interactive Render.” This will show how your proxy looks with the new materials applied.
