My Project Charter template is the tool I use to align client expectations and build trust from day one. It takes 15 minutes to fill out and stops the phrase “but I thought this was included” in its tracks.

Sketchup Workflow Tips, Tricks, and Hacks for a Faster, Streamlined Design Process.

Stop wasting time and energy in Sketchup! This guide reveals 15 powerful hacks to optimize your workflow, saving you precious minutes and sanity on every project.

Level Up Your Efficiency

Welcome, designers! Whether you’re a seasoned Sketchup pro or just starting out, these tips and tricks from Ravenor’s Design Academy will take your skills to the next level.

  • Import Smarter: Before importing your plan, clean it up! Remove furniture, MEP layers, and hatches, then purge the file. Double-check measurements and scale too – it’s a simple step that can save you headaches later.
  • Lock it Down: Lock your plan before tracing to avoid deleting unwanted lines. Use keyboard shortcuts to lock your line tool for axis-specific drawing – a game-changer for precision!
  • Embrace Autosave, But Be Proactive: Even with autosave enabled, hit “Save” regularly after major changes.
  • Organize with Tags: Master the power of tags to categorize elements in your file. Start early and create custom tags for Plan, Floor, Walls, Ceiling, and False Ceiling.
  • Keep it Open: Stay efficient by keeping the Entity Info and Tags windows open while modeling.
  • Template Time: Save time with a pre-built template containing your essential tags.
  • Copy, Group, and Extrude: Make life easier by copying your imported plan twice. Assign the first copy to the #Floor tag and extrude it. Repeat for the #Ceiling and #Walls tags, hiding the #False Ceiling until later.
  • Stack and Find: Move the original plan on top of the floor “plane” for easy reference.
  • Shift Lock for Precision: Use the Shift key to lock lines and rectangles while drawing for perfect accuracy.
  • Reference is Key: Leverage existing objects like door heights to set other dimensions.
  • Chaos Cosmos: Discover render-ready plants, clutter, and 3D people to enhance your scene. ‘Windows’ work great too!
  • 3D Warehouse Browser: Download single assets directly into your model for efficient additions. Avoid complex assets, as they can overload your file.

P.s. I have a few render-ready assets on my Patreon here, and also on my Gumroad storefront. Proceedings will go into supporting the site and the channel 🙂

These 15 tips are just the beginning! Implement them into your workflow and watch your efficiency soar. Remember to subscribe to my YouTube channel, and leave a comment below with your favorite Sketchup hacks!
